Service Description:

This dataset is a derivative of the Sonoma County's countywide fine scale vegetation and habitat map (83 classes). That map product, and the classification used to create it, can be found at http://sonomavegmap.org/data-downloads. This dataset represents a subset of the water and wetland vegetation classes that appear in the fine-scale map (see the product datasheet for more details). These map classes were mapped using a combination of field work, photointerpretation, and computer-based machine learning. Many of the vernal pools and herbaceous wetlands in the southern part of the county were taken from existing San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) datasets (namely, the NCARI and BAARI datasets). Extensive manual photo interpretation and field data collection/validation was used to refine existing SFEI datasets based on new imagery.

Note that this data is in no way a map of jurisdictional wetlands, but is a map of wetland map classes from the Sonoma Veg Map Classification, which was developed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Also note that the map is designed to be used at scales of 1:5,000 and smaller. Finally, this dataset will not depict small areas of herbaceous wetland (< 1/4 acre) or herbaceous wetland types that are difficult to distinguish from upland herbaceous types using aerial photointerpretation.

Map classes depicted in this layer (WAT_WET Field):

  • Water - River

  • Water - Estuary

  • Water - Ocean

  • Water - Lake and Reservoir

  • Water - Laguna

  • Tidal Salt Marsh

  • Freshwater Herbaceous Wetland

  • Woody Riparian

In addition to the WAT_WET field, there is a LAKE_FLAG field that applies to the polygons classified as 'Water - Lake and Reservoir'. For these polygons, values of 0, 1, 2, and 3 are assigned. These values mean the following:

0 - No larger than MMU forest, riparian woody vegetation, or herbaceous wetland abuts the lake/reservoir

1 - Upland forest abuts the lake or reservoir, but no larger than MMU stands of riparian vegetation or herbaceous wetland vegetation abut the lake or reservoir

2 - Riparian woody vegetation abuts the lake or reservoir (and so may upland woody vegetation), but no larger than MMU stands of herbaceous wetland vegetation abut the lake or reservoir

3 - Herbaceous wetland abuts the lake or reservoir (and so may upland and riparian woody vegetation)
